It has so much promise, this book. But the magic isn't very magical and the characters aren't quite compelling enough. And the things that are supposed to be shocking surprises just aren't at all. Maybe it was the translation? But I don't know - my mom read it in Spanish and she was pretty lukewarm about it, too.

YA book about a sulky teenager visiting the amazon. Good character development, beautiful scenes, but the writing style was too simplistic to properly convey the atmosphere. It's difficult to tell whether this is due to the original writing or the translation. Good story, but the overly simplistic language let it down.

This book definitely reads like YA, and not in a great way. It’s an interesting storyline, and it was overall enjoyable to read. It just felt like it was catering to a young audience, almost to the point of feeling patronizing in the writing style at times. Not bad, still a fun read!

Enjoyable read. Very important moral.

When Alex Cole's mother get sick, his father has to ship the kids off to different grandmothers so he can take his wife for treatment. Alex is sent to his grandmother in NYC. She is a magazine reporter.

She is not the stay home and bake cookies type. She is the type that doesn't meet a 15-year-old at a NYC airport and expects him to find her apartment.

She is also the kind that takes him on assignment with her to the Amazon to find a Beast. This animal seems to be a Big Foot like creature that lives isolated in the Amazon.

Alex has to contend with the leaders on the trip, his grandmother, guides, and the military. He allies himself with a girl, Nadia, on the trip. Both are chosen by the indigenous people to help them with the interlopers who want to take over their land.

Good story. Definitely for sixth grade and up thanks to early drug references in the story.

The first novel in a trilogy for young adults by Allende. It's a thrilling, magical adventure through the Amazon! A fun ride with interesting characters.
