I almost didn't finish reading this book. In fact, I started it about two years ago and it has taken me that long to finally motivate myself to get through to the end. The characters were mostly caricatures, the plot was predictable, and the action never built to any kind of suspense. The narration left no room for subtlety in the characters' thoughts and actions. I read it in Spanish so I cannot attribute any of these issues to awkwardness of translation. This certainly was not the best book to read as an introduction to Allende's work. (Review written in 2017)

I was pretty disappointed in this book. I love Allende, and have enjoyed most of her books. This one did not seem to have the magic like her others. Perhaps it is because this book was a young adult book, but something was missing from it. It was a fine read, but nothing like her other greats.

Good book that makes you think about the magic of the world.

I had this book since middle school but it took traveling all the way to the Galápagos Islands for me to finally read and finish it! Honestly it made for a better experience. A lot of the themes in the book regarding traveling through land untouched by most people, protecting endangered species found nowhere else, and being responsible for the planet is very relevant.

As for the book itself, I found myself intrigued by the experience of reading a book in which I agreed with all of its rhetoric and lessons it wanted to imbibe, but put off by the writing style. It may just be how it was translated, but I just could not get into the story. I was pretty disconnected.

If you’re looking for a coming of age YA book that has themes on protecting the planet and the like, even though I didn’t love it as much, I do say give it a try!
