“If you were a storm, I would lie down and rest in your rain. If you were a river, I would drink from your currents. If you were a poem, I would never cease to read you. I adore the girl you once were, and I love the woman you have become.”

Can we talk about the fact that this book made me cry? No? Okay, cool.

I had thought that the first book in this duology was incredible, but let me tell you, this one blew it away. Initially, I hadn’t thought that the first book even needed a sequel. Never before have I been so happy about being wrong. The entire plot of the book consisted of court politics, rebellion, treason, and ultimately personal battles with demons of the past. I found it intriguing, magical, and haunting. The only reason this book hasn’t made my “all-time favourites” list is because I am a reader who clings to good character development. While the plot of this book was AMAZING, the characters personalities seemed to be a bit background. Don’t get me wrong, it works for this story. It just doesn’t work for my favourite books ever.

I give this book a solid 5/5 stars and would definitely recommend!

I enjoyed the second half of this book. However the first half was incredibly infuriating.
Not to mention the main character goes from being extremely flawed and growing as a human in the first book, to being Mary Poppins in this one.

Ross's writing, however, is stunning. The flaws of this book can easily be placed on the back burner because the writing is that good.

Three stars because I ultimately felt that the second half of this book could have been added to the end of the first book to have one stunning novel.

A great YA book, but underwhelming for me. I think a younger crowd would very much enjoy this sequel. I found that I was looking for more intrigue, more adventure, more action.
