This was a solid second novel. I loved the first book a lot, but this one lacked the same punch as the first. While I still recommend it, this was not my favorite one. It was more slow in the beginning and more gory. I loved the characters and returning to the world Rebecca Ross built, so still a solid story.
I didn't love this quite as much as The Queen's Rising because of two main reasons: I loved TQR as a standalone and didn't feel like it needed more, and I didn't feel as much of the romance in this one. It wasn't like the romance was over the top in the first one, but I always expect sequels to have more romance, and this didn't. I just would have liked to see more of it! It was still a great story, but I didn't feel like it was entirely necessary. However, I was reminded again how much I love Rebecca Ross's stories because omg they're so wholesome. The characters are KIND AND WONDERFUL and it is so refreshing because most stories lately don't have truly kind characters. And the themes are so good. There are themes in this about light versus darkness, how where you come from doesn't define you. I can't wait to read Rebecca's future novels! And omg, the last chapter was so good. I just wish the rest of the book had the focus on romance that the last chapter did!
Absolutely a must read. This book reckons with the nature of justice, revenge, family, and history, and Ross draws up some incredible characters to delve into these weighty topics. I was completely absorbed in the story and was truly sad to say goodbye to Brienna, Cartier, and this fantastic world. I can't wait to see what Rebecca Ross writes next!
Holy shit. That was brilliant. The perfect sequel to The Queen's Rising.
My Rating : 4đ
Okay.. I was obsessed with the first book. And I had so much expectations for this book. I am not saying it was bad, It was ridiculously good and I still loved the story and the characters, but I was expecting more. I felt the story was slightly boring and dragged in the middle, but it managed to get interesting later! And that ending chapter! đȘđȘđȘ I almost cried! And they were definitely happy tears!! I love my babies Brienna & Aodhan đđ

This was fine. It was a slow read, just like The Queenâs Rising. Mostly I read it out of obligation more than interest. There was a lot of unnecessary drama and a quick glossing over some human trafficking issues that I felt could have been addressed better. Also, the need to keep reminding us of the origins of the teacher-student relationship between Brienna & Cartier/Aodhan instead of moving into a more mature (and less creepy) place. Some people are going to really like this, but it wasnât great for me. I will day that I appreciate how this series values strong women, not in the âspecial saviorâ way, but in a way that feels more authentic.
I finally got around to wrapping up The Queenâs Rising duology. Iâm so glad I got around to these books so quickly. I enjoyed reading both of them so much. Thereâs so much world building and found families in these books. I also really loved the setting so much.
I absolutely love the world in these books and the setting is just part of it. I think Maevana is probably my favorite fictional world outside of Harry Potter. Thereâs such depth to their history and it all feels so real. Each house has their own history and their own culture that fits into the country of Maevana. Iâm glad we got to explore it all. I also love the characters in this book. Specifically the female characters. Theyâre real and they struggle, but theyâre also fierce warriors. I absolutely loved the scene where Brienna is injured and she struggles so much to make it out alive. Because itâs real and sheâs not just powering through the way most action sequences happen in books. I would kill for Ewan or Keela so jot that down. And I really enjoy the friendship Brienna finds with Isolde.
I would say that my chief complaint is that there wasnât enough. I think this could have easily been a five book or more series that starts with the original resistance and goes from there up until when this book ends. It does have a lot of depth and world building but there could have been so much more. I also feel like we could have had a greater bond with the characters if we had some fluff or filler in between all of the heavy stuff to make us love them more. It also would have paid off more with the twist at the end of this one. I could easily have read 500 pages per book for 5 books and been perfectly content.
Despite this book being nearly 500 pages long, it didnât take a lot of reading time to finish this one. The plot really pushed the story forward and I enjoyed it so much. I canât wait to see what this author publishes next.
