this is one of those rare books where i start out saying, “i don’t know if i like this?” until it crept into my heart and shattered it into a million pieces

This book is ultimately the most lovely book I’ve read this year. A few of the reviews talk about “over description” and I have to whole heartedly disagree. I get so bored of novels that are over written and don’t flow. The descriptions in this book provide such a sense of the longing and love being depicted. I am obsessed with this book. The way I could feel the love and loss that these characters were experiencing was profound. I could only dream of writing the way Sarah Winman writes. Ugh. This book is incredible.

Someone asked me what this book was about while I was still finishing it up, and I had some trouble trying to pin that “what” down. I’m not sure the Goodreads description does it justice—it says a bit too much. I think the copy on the galley I read says it best: “an unforgettable and heartbreaking novel celebrating love in all its forms.” The writing has a pleasant subtlety to it, and part of the joy of reading it is getting slowly closer and closer to the heart of the story as you read more and more, like peeling the rind off an orange and pulling away wedges of the fruit one by one.

It’s refreshing to see love’s complexities explored beyond infidelity and strict heterosexuality. Relationships of note take many forms, are expressed in many ways, and are of no more or less importance as a result of these differences. On top of this, the book is overall very poetic, emphasizing how life at its most real is poetic and when viewed from afar follows a kind of poetic logic. I’m happy I could read this, and I give it something like a 4.5 on the low end.

I received this as a free arc from "First To Read." This is a wonderful book. The writing style is one that doesn't use excess words just to take up space. It has a poetic quality that enhances the story. The book is told from two points of view: Ellis and Michael. The narration between the two views just flows. The story unfolds without being forced. The "revelations" are revealed without any big build-up. This is a story with no frills which makes it beautiful. The description of the book says that "This is almost a love story. But it's not as simple as that." That's not entirely correct. It's not a simple story but it is a love story.
