Fun read and great slice of our history. I knew about the war with Tripoli but not in this detail or how it related to other historical events.
Read this book for a school assignment. The author jumps from one point-of-view to another with hardly any distinction, was a difficult book to read and understand. The thesis of the book was to describe a war the world has forgotten and yet most of the book is spent on the politics of the book not the battles.
The authors blew events out of proportion and seems to constantly backtrack on the facts to state that "oh man America is so great!" It's definitely anti-Muslim in that they claim that the US was specifically targeted, but reading between the very wide lines lets me see that the pirates were very much opportunistic. If France had a smaller navy and couldn't have paid the extortion, I bet they would have been all over French ships, too.
Now I know where the "..shores of Tripoli..." reference in Marine Corps Hymn comes from.

I learned a lot and enjoyed this look into history. It dragged at points and ended kind of simply but overall a great read.
