It feels like I’ve been hearing about this book for years, and its been both poles of extremely positive and extremely critical, so I was very keen to get my hands on it and decide for myself.
I admit at first I was pretty concerned, there seemed to be the usual bogus trappings of self-help a kind of overpromise of the books strategy, with just enough ‘disclaimer’ to make it seem like if things don’t go well its clearly the readers fault, buuuut I think that was mostly just my self-help cynicism talking…
Really Atomic habits is just a fairly straightforward thesis on how to build good habits, while there is a bit of salesmanship, its ultimately a series of strategies and techniques for behaviour change that are relatively robust. I feel like some of the critiques focus on the butchering of behaviour science, in my humble opinion there is a difference between packaging ideas in the language of self-help but coming to robust advice and conclusions and producing complete garbage or even harmful advice. (in case its not obvious I do thing Atomic habits is the former)
What I like about Atomic habits is that while there is a bit of hype – there is no claim you’re going to solve world hunger, cure depression, or even make changes beyond what you even want to – its really just solid niche advice about Habits specifically.
I was interested in this book because, while I’m pretty good at creating good habits and sticking to them, I wanted to be great at it. I knew how highly rated this book was, and even though I don’t usually read self-help books, I decided to give it a try. I am so glad I did. Clear has completely blown my mind in the way I view habits, and has given me every possible guideline on how to start good habits and keep them going. I will be going back to reference this book often when I need the direction and motivation.

I feel like reading this created an atomic habit, with how each chapter compounded on the last.
Loved it! So interesting, explained really well. Absolutely fascinating. Must buy the physical book!
Useful, but dragged on unnecessarily- just as effective and to the point in a shorter volume. Good, practical advice especially the 'two day' off the wagon habit tip.

Useful if you aim to improve your habits and your approach to life. The author explaines habits formation and shows the reader how to build efficient ones, leaving the bad ones behind. Read this if you feel lacking of self control or if you want to learn a reliable method to stick to your habits.
(4 ⭐️) definitely would recommend because it really dives into detail on habits and really changed my aspect in some parts. It gave advice that I’ll use and remember and overall just a great book about habits. It’s also written in an easy accessible way for anyone to read and also includes graphs and bullet points. James clear gives explanations and examples that further prove his point. I won’t lie I did get bored at some parts but overall a good book that I got a lot of things out of.
