I liked the premise, but I got halfway through the book and I'm still indifferent towards all the characters, I absolutely don't care what happens, so I give up.

This won't be the most elaborate review ever. It's just some thoughts after finishing. It was a little slow in the beginning for me for some reason, but it really picked up after I got to Part 2. I loved the writing style and the premise of self-interest vs humanitarianism. (Probably not the best choice of words to describe it, but it'll do.) Also, the warning on the cover of the book was very appropriate :) I'll definitely look into more of Ironmonger's works!
This books is all about having faith in humanity up until is 2020, the pandemic is ACTUALLY here, and you can't find a single roll of toilet paper for 2 months in the whole of Australia thanks to the hoarders.
Other quickfire notes: this book was about 100 pages too long, the female love interests (multiple thereof) were all unrealistic nymphs out to get Joe (?), Lew spoke too damn much but that aligns with self-important millionaire bosses (we've all had one) and small town ~quirky people is a predictable trope but I can live with that.
Was this all a big religious metaphor? I hope not.
The hungry girl with fish scales around her mouth was the strongest visual for me.

I didn't really hate nor like this book. I kind of expected more from it though, the synopsis promised a great mystery but that kind of fell flat for me. The story just basically feels like one, big, filler chapter. Nothing particularly exciting happened, it was just mediocre.
The writing style of this book was nice, it was easy to turn the pages so that probably helped me not disliking this book. The chapters were fairly short, that also made that this book was easy to read.
All in all it was an okay read, nothing special but not horrible either.
