Read it in one sitting and loved it. Very lovable rogues, and I really enjoyed the variety of different characters among the Liangshan bandits. I particularly love the way Lu Da talks, both towards other characters and her internal thoughts.

The audiobook didn't grab my attention. Not sure if it's the narrator or the story. Going to attempt to read it instead.

I often hesitate to give a book five stars. The Water Outlaws steals all five for pure thrilling entertainment, intersectional feminism, revolution and fun.

This book was an absolute breath of fresh air, I haven’t read anything else like it. This gender-bent reimagining of a Chinese martial arts story is chock full of intimidating women, casual queerness, and a nuanced exploration of morality. What does loyalty mean to you, and how far would you go to protect those you’re loyal to? The moral lessons of this book reminded me of the eternal words of John Lewis: “Get in good trouble”.

This is an excellent modern imagining of a historic tale. I love to read about women and nonbinary people wielding their martial arts prowess, deadly weapons, and even deadlier magic to cut down corruption. I was less comfortable with some of the body horror, but the story was propulsive enough to keep my interest. I wasn’t familiar with the underlying story but that wasn’t an issue.
