This is one where I would rate quality higher than enjoyment - I think it was good but the torture stuff was rough (although I appreciated the clear content warning up front) and I was rooting for the characters but wasn't fully invested in the story.

i'd never heard of the the water margins before reading this and it was a really cool introduction to the story and to the wuxia genre as a whole. loved the evolving motives of lin and the bandits, it felt like a perfectly lined up domino effect. and huang didn't pull any punches in the fight scenes, i could really see the cinematic over-the-top style in their movements. really enjoyed it!

This is hands down the best fantasy book I’ve ever read. I was enthralled from the beginning - imagining each fight scene in incredible detail and rooting for the flawed main characters as they navigated a complex political world. I can’t put how much I love it into words yet so I’ll come back when I can.

Absolutely loved the way the story was crafted and told through the characters' different POVs. I approached this as Chinese martial-arts-esque fantasy because that's what I heard about the book, but as I realised when I finished it's a retelling of a famous Chinese classic so what appears as fantasy to me is probably more a case of cultural/spiritual elements that appear otherworldly. Either way, thorougly enjoyable with great storytelling, strong character development and queer themes.
