The writing was sharp and the tone was sad, but I found the plot lacking. I kept struggling to figure out what this book was really about... here's what I came up with: love, family, growing up, how we handle adversity, and acceptance.

3.5/5 ⭐️ • I feel like if I reread this, I’d give it a higher rating. Why?

I've really enjoyed the two books of Banana Yoshimoto I have read. They are easy to read and delicate in the storytelling though the matter can be intense at times. Look forward to sourcing some more by this author.

I will mostly remember The Lake as the book I read in Stanley Park.

Global Read Challenge 11: Japan

I should not have read the back of the book before reading this because the cult plays a minor part and is introduced pretty late in the book. I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had to piece things together myself and wasn't always waiting for the cult drama. There were some really cool parts and overall the book was a pretty quick fun read.
