I can't even tell you how many times I laughed out loud at this book. It also has all the good parts of a romance novel that leave you feeling like you're the one actually falling in love, without any of the patriarchal toxic bulkshit we've all come to expect and accept.

“Obviously, maintaining the fiction will require a certain degree of physical contact between us. But please don’t kiss me again. Not on the mouth, anyway.”

“Why? Are you Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman?” His blush deepened.

“No. I simply prefer to reserve that intimacy for people I actually like.” - Chapter 8, Page 59

This was such a delightful read! This was not my very first romance read (and won’t be my last!), but it felt like discovering a whole new type of bookish rom-com and I enjoyed every minute! Alexis Hall created a familiar, but unique and insecure world from Lucien’s perspective and the banter and the humor?! They were next level!

The main characters, Lucien and Oliver, have *major* flaws. I love books with characters that aren’t one-dimensional, and these MCs brought self-depreciation, family insecurities, attachment issues, and more into their interactions. The flaws were real and vulnerable and they avoided showing them like the plague, but they were there and that felt realistic, even through the distant hysterical rom-com feel of it all, it was impossible not to understand Lucien and Oliver and make sense of their actions, no matter how infuriating and abject they were.

I put a hold at the library for 2 more of Alexis Hall’s books long before I was done with this one and that means exactly what you think - pick this up if you genuinely want to have a moment in real life where you take a second and realize you’ve been kicking your feet and giggling for half of the story.

Fake dating done right!

This book was something. With all the positive reviews I guess I was hoping for more. Certainly had lots of back and forth and boohoo me’s. And the conversations with Alex and Rhys literally made me want to rip my hair out. So yeah, not really a fan. The only reason it’s not at a 1 star is because of the fact that it made me laugh out loud multiple times.

OHHHHHH how I loved this. As comforting as a spot of tea and as delicious as a crumpet (are those delicious? I don’t know; I’m American). And laugh out loud funny at so many moments. Of course I loved Luc and Oliver, but there are so many standout characters in this cast that I need about six more in the series. Thankfully I can slide right into the next one.

Also, fantastic narration for the audiobook version. Each character had their own personality that was so well conveyed through voice. Just listen to it. Or read it. As soon as possible!
