This book was my favourite book back in high school. After reading an other book about time travel, it was very interesting. 20 plus years ago it was a 5 stars. I still enjoyed it, but having a better understanding of history, politics and society makes it different. Or at least it is different for me. I remember crying a lot at the last chapters the first time I read it. This time, I had no tears for the characters. For some reason they felt more distant to me. Still, I really love this book. I believe it is different from most of Mark Twain's work. His idea of time travelling was very interesting and I think unique during his time. Undermining Merlin's magic with "modern" (19th century) technology is a genius idea.

I enjoyed the second half a lot. But I feel the book missed an opportunity. It explores class systems and religious control, but doesn't bring it to any conclusions. I think it is overly American and doesn't consider the other points of view except for a couple of chapters in the middle. The main character is also too talented at everything.

I read this as a kid sometime, and I didn't really get it. And it always bothered me that 1) Boss knows about the eclipse that occurs 13 centuries before he's born, and 2) he could trust this random person that he was in the correct date (only one day off!) and location for it. As an adult, I still can't get past that. But setting that aside, the rest of the book was far more pleasurable than I remembered. The foreword in the Penguin Classic version I have really helped shed light on the state of Clemons' life when he wrote this, and I recommend it. Its a neat little adventure story, if you can get past all the turn of the century slang.
I think 'ol MT is far too hard on the people of the past, but the ending so tragic and poignant that I'm willing to forgive. I first read this book years ago, and that ending has stuck with me.
It probably brings the book up from a 3.0 to a 4.0.
