It’s not fair to judge a book based on my experience with another book by the author but too bad. This certainly was not The Alchemist. Also there was a really fun opportunity for a throuple but Coelho is too much of a prude to embrace that.

This book was simplistic and confusing. I did feel like the main character through most of it- uncertain of what the path and traditions meant
Minor: Sexual content
One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It opened doors I never knew existed. Ending fell just a little short, the rest of the book was glorious but the ending was a bit meh.

This was recommended by a friend and so I was looking forward to it. But, I was disappointed... Sure there were bits I found interesting but the characters were so one dimensional I could not enjoy them, the storyline was so haphazard and there was so much repetition it got dull very quickly.
I'd reviewed (not much to write) it on my blog here - Brida
Audiobook listen.
Though the book held my interest, and kept me curious as to where the story was going- it really didn’t make much of an impression on me. I didn’t find I particularly liked any of the characters, and by the end of the book, I realized I didn’t really like the story as a whole. It felt scattered and contradictory. There was a lot of repetition but not much life to the story. Maybe this is one that would be better read as a book rather than audiobook (?) but I didn’t like the book enough to try picking up a copy.

Similar to others of Coelho’s, Brida is about a young person on a journey of enlightenment. In this case, she is in search of her magical Gift and her soulmate.
Unlike others of Coelho’s, this was not a novel I found particularly spellbinding. The pieces of the story were engaging in themselves, but the pacing was all over the place; in parts, so slow, I found myself putting the book aside for days at a time. On the other hand, the climax of the story whizzed past, without exploring the characters’ feelings as deeply as I’d become accustomed to in the rather less exciting moments.
Overall, I give this 3 stars because the writing is always beautiful in a Coelho novel, an I did find many parts of the story and traditions of this particular type of witchcraft to be quite interesting.
I wonder how the ending would differ if it were written today.

Hmmmmm. . . it doesn't seem fair to compare this book to "The Alchemist," but I am going to anyway. "Brida" wasn't as good. I had trouble finding the point of this book and I didn't always even enjoy reading it.
Brida is the story of young Irish woman who is seeking her Gift (can someone explain to me why Coelho choses to capitalize certain words throughout this book?). She asks Magus, an old man who is always strolling in the woods, to teach her the Tradition of the Sun. Brida also has Wicca, a woman, instruct her in the Traditions on the Moon.
Neither of the traditions are explained, making Coelho’s warning at the start of the novel, “Practicing such rituals without guidance is dangerous, inadvisable, unnecessary, and can greatly hinder the Spiritual Search” (again with the capitalization), seem a bit over the top.
Essentially, Brida is seeking her soul mate (yawn). She has sex with her boyfriend, sex with the old man, and dances naked around a fire.
I know that many people love Paulo Coelho. I do not. I do not connect with his stories, characters or writing style. This is the second novel I have read by him, I read The Alchemist as well, and neither book worked for me.
