A prequel to the Bone series, it introduces the young Princess Ross, who appears as a feisty cow-racing grandma in later books.

A lovely addition to the Bone series. Charles Vess' illustrations (which I first saw in Neil Gaiman's 'Stardust) are beautiful and bring a nice new touch to a series I already know and love. 'Rose' provides a nice backstory for Gran'ma Ben, even though she seems little like the rough and tumble lady I grew to adore in the other nine books.

3,5/5. Quite interesting prequel to the Bone series, especially liked the art.

Now I'm ready to re-read the series!

The Charles Vess artwork is wonderful, but this prequel/side story to Bone lacks the humor that I value so much in the main series.

As a big fan of the Bone series...this sucks. The plot conflicts with Rose's past in the main story and as much as I liked the overall aesthetic of the art style with this one, the faces are just...ew.

Well Charles Vess is doing the art, so obviously the art is better. But it is offset by the font on the lettering being almost unreadable. This is a prequel, but really it doesn't contain any surprises. Other than the large number of bad choices Rose makes. Still not a bad story, just not a great one.
