I have to say this novel is amazing. Very high and vivid imagination. What I like about this book is the strangeness and how the plot is unpredictable. The writing is very good, easy to grasp and also fast paced. I like the development of characters as well. I am impressed by this fantasy novel, although somewhat very abstract and complex but it's also very readable.

Five stars, fo sho. LOVE this book.

I actually read this book for the first time years ago when I was very young. When I saw this in a used book store I remembered liking it so I picked it up and thought I'd have a go re-reading it.

While the writing style is not quite my cup of tea, I think the world the author created is absolutely fantastic. It's crazy, but very well thought out, and I think the characters are very interesting. They are so wild and varied. Candy is a very solid protagonist.

Overall I love the imagination behind this story and I'm looking forward to reading more.

This book is a little dark even for pre-teens; the tone is pretty bleak and it starts out with a detailed description of a suicide. I guess, well, it was written by Clive Barker of horror novel fame after all. I haven't read any further into the series - in fact I didn't know it was a series until recently. Apparently it's based on a series of six paintings Barker created? I would suggest reading the hardcover edition of the first book for that reason, or at least seeking it out, because the paintings are on the cover of that edition but not the paperback. I don't think this is the strongest YA fantasy series and the first book isn't as exciting or coherent as Barker's other YA book, "The Theif of Always" but if you're into YA fantasy it's worth a read.

much better than most of the things I read as a kid.

3.5 stelle.

One of the better dark fantasy novels I've read. Very much in the tradition of "Alice in Wonderland" or Lovecraft's "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath." Filled with Barker's unique imagination and masterful writing style.
