This book was so bad the only reason I finished it was because I hated it so much. After which I had to rant for an solid 2 hours at my sister about all the failings of this pile of garbage. I'll just do a TL;DR here for you:
This book has all the flash and substance of a carnival fun house.

If you like fantasy, then this is a great book. It draws you in and rocks you into the story like the sea that appears suddenly on the prarie. A must read for anyone who loves fantasy, but especially for the young adult crowd!

So I saw this book in a library about four years ago, but never bothered to pick it off the shelf because not only did it look a little too weird for me, but I couldn't even read the ambigram title =P ('Course, I didn't know about ambigrams back then, so I just thought it was really weird writing)
But this past trip to the city library, I caught sight of it again, and decided it was fate and so I went ahead and checked it out. And I'm pretty glad I did; this was a nice read. Also this was the second *strangest* children's book I have ever encountered, the first place being occupied by The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, lol. (And strangest books in general being anything else Catherynne M. Valente has ever written XD)
I will be interested in the sequel and then final sequel, which I hear has just come out :)
