DID NOT FINISH: 61%

It just suddenly hit me that I don't want to keep forcing myself to read this because it's not my cup of tea. It's all the things I don't like about middlegrade books (and I don't know if this is middlegrade but it feels like it) : all action, too many characters, too whimsical and I feel no connection with anything.

I liked this fine. I'll probably finish the series. It's just a bit too out there for me.

The #abarat series found me at one of the darkest times of my life and it's story of #escapism and #adventure really helped to guide me through that time. #clivebarker is a literary genius and although Abarat may not be his most well known or praised creation, it is what introduced me to him as an author. My illustrated copies of the first two books are prized possessions I am not willing to part with. Someday, I hope to own an illustrated copy of the third as well.

Abarat is a coming of age story about a young girl from Chickentown USA who longs for anything besides her little rural town. She bites off a bit more than she can chew when she accidentally summons the seas of Isabella! Follow her journey as she is whisked away to a land ruled by time and yet...not as one would expect. You will meet exciting creatures beyond your wildest imagination, join her on adventures you never asked for, and hold your sanity tightly as the complex world of Abarat threatens everything you think you know to be real.

6/10

Extremely bizarre, imaginative, silly,
And sometimes surprisingly dark! Feels like the phantom toll booth meets Tim Burton meets Mirrormask. A very delightful and vivid adventure and very unique.

“Better to be present in this laughing moment”

When I read this in high school I really loved it, but I tried to re-read as an adult and it is actually kinda disturbing?! But I love the time islands, and the way each island is a frozen time of the day. I spent a lot of time thinking about which island I would want to live on.

A great other world is created here, but it's the character of Candy who really pulls everything together.
