I haven't read any straight superhero books in a while and this was VERY enjoyable. Really well-paced and fun with lots of action and great character moments. I've always liked Laura Kinney as a character and it's nice to see her getting a solo book where she's relatively happy and stable. The parallels between Laura as a teenager and Gabby are very well-done and felt like a nice way to transition her into adulthood and being the mentor instead of the troubled kid.

Generally, this was very fun, and I really liked the characters and the art. I've never read a X-23 comic before, so this was my introduction to Laura, and it was a decent one. They talk enough about her backstory that I wasn't left wondering where the heck she came from, but didn't bog down *this* story with it. I'd read more of her.

SpoilerThings did get a little weird, though, when she stole an Ant-Man suit and went to kill nanites with the Wasp in one of her clones, but that was a very short segment.

I mean, I guess making Wolverine a female clone of Wolverine, desperately trying to follow a anti-killing creed is fairly interesting. At the very least I want to read more.

This was my first time reading about Laura/X-23/non-Logan-Wolverine. I've got a lot of catching up to do on who's who and what's what in the modern Marvel universe. Reading from a "blind" standpoint, this was good. Plenty of backstory and enough character history that I didn't feel lost. I'm still not sold on Squirrel Girl though.

I want to adore everything I read. I want to be on the edge of my seat, anticipating the next beat, engaging with the work on the terms they set whatever they may be.

Most premises are enough to get me interested. Most characters can be great given the right story. You can make anything work. Not everything will work for everyone but I want it to work for me as much as it can.

I like to enjoy the things I read. That fact made college even more frustrating for me.

But anything by Tom Taylor always does the trick for me. Never stale and always gripping onto the key aspects of what makes superhero comics work the guy can write with that pleasant optimistic tone that makes his comics stand out to me. He never compromises the stakes for humor, though his books are always funny. And he knows when to get real in the best way.

This is why I think he could take even the most overdone plot and make it work. Not that this particular plot is overdone because he brings new elements into the government made weapon plot that makes this stand out.

This comic just works for me. Beautiful paneling, excellent wit, and knock out art.

5 stars.

Probably 3.5-4 stars if I could stop being such a Laura stan and having so many feelings all over this, but I can't and I'm not even sorry about it, tbh.
