not me finding out i have low self-worth. no truly, fantastic book. this is the kind of book you just need to go over multiple times in order to work on each issue or flag you’ve noticed about yourself. so great.

“To be happy we need someone to love, something to do, and something to look forward to.”
This book was incredibly helpful to me and full of wonderful lessons, but fell victim to two very crucial things that made the book difficult to relate to for myself. This is just a personal thought though, because as the author said she is not a scientist, much of this is anecdotal and related to experience, so if this is someone else’s experience, it would be perfect.
1. This books lessons were mostly related to codependents with chemical dependents, and I think the scope was a bit narrow.
2. There was a focus on Christianity, so if you don’t have that religion parts will not relate.
So much of the book and many of the lessons still resonate and hit home, and i do believe reading it has made me a better, and more whole person.

Read this to support a friend in addiction recovery and am so glad I did. Really opened my eyes to some ways I need to change. While this is heavily focused on alcoholism and 12-step programs I think its ideas have universal value and it's an interesting insight into how addiction can affect families (besides the obvious). Highly recommended.
Update: giving this 4 stars now because I think about this book and its ideas so much. I find myself recommending it more than I expected, too.
