I kept stretching this out...till the Rogue One book came out (though towards the end...I just said, "no, I want to know what happens next, NOW). I am done early...so now I am in withdrawal. I hope they publish the book, early so this doesn't kill me.

Suffice it to say, I loved it. I doubt that you NEED to read it before Rogue One, but for us geeks, it's nerd on, dude.

Has Obitt is one of the strangest names in text, I just have to say that.

Saw is great in this book. Galen & Lyra are complex AND Jyn is amazing. I love the turn of POV. Great addition.

Orson Krennic is a villain that you love to hate. Well written. I cannot wait for the rest of the story.

Great book. Read it.

After 3 1/2 months of trying to read this book, I have finished. It wasn't that it was bad, it's just... slow.

I'm not saying that this story should've been written, but I feel as though it could've been shorter. I think that there was more filler than anything.

Shout to Tarkin, as he was not a Grand Moff just yet.

Definitely one of the best new canon books I have read. I have seen many people say that this is necessary reading before going to see Rogue One, and I can see why. Going into the movie I have a much fuller understanding of what Lyra and Galen Erso went through and what will motivate Jyn. I know Saw better than I did before. Most of all, I can feel the weight of Orsin Krennick. This book is fabulous. You should pick it up.

My over all opinion: This is not necessary to read before the film, but gives a very good rationale why Orson Krennic is so villainous. I thought the last two chapters were very compelling particularly. It also shows us Saw's relation to Jyn, which is nice. Personally the more technical things were boring (besides knowing that Kyber Cyrstals were used to construct the Death Star rays). Be warned: There is a lot of information dumping in this book!

Rather, what is compelling about this book is the dynamic between Galcen, Lyra and Krennic, as the book progresses. Krennic attempts to manipulates the couple for his personal gain and to harness the intelligence of Galcen's mind for evil purposes. Lyra acts as the moral voice of the story and it is refreshing to read in a Star Wars book about a couple who are so devoted to each other as Galcen and Lyra are. You can sense their love and their bond. Give me more of the humanity within this story and less of the political/technological mumbo-jumbo.

I liked the book but didn't love it. Parts were slow and not dramatic enough. If you can skim the book at your leisure and still get the basic plot arc, do so.

Great at connecting the dots between the galactic republic transition into the empire

Slow burning, a space imagining of an almost too real nuclear war.

Oh my god Rogue One can't come soon enough.

Another solid Star Wars novel from the prequel era.

Things that I particularly liked about this novel:
- the infighting and competitive element that the emperor has created within his ranks
- exploration of the scientific aspect of the Star Wars universe that I haven't really seen / read about in other titles
- further expansion of the role that Geonosis played in the building of the Death Star following the end of the Clone Wars
- references to how the Empire used propaganda to tell the story of betrayal of the Jedi

What would have made this novel better:
- Needs more Palpatine
- should have followed up on the Geonosion 'issues' more (I won't go into details for spoilers)
