There were only two true downfalls to this book - it's predictability, and Sage's... lack of restraint.
The idea was great and I truly enjoyed reading it (and I would mention that I feel as though things weren't described well enough, but I fear that's just me 3am brain skipping it, so it doesn't factor into my review) and I actually loved the author's writing.
But again, every major 'plot twist' I guessed mere pages into the book. The thing is, Sage is clueless in this book about the world around her, which frustratingly makes the reader clueless as well, and yet I still knew exactly what was coming next. It's like we got both sides of a bad coin. Knowing nothing but I knew that was coming.
I just found Sage's character to be frustrating at times - she rushed into things and didn't properly think them through. However, this was somewhat acknowledged and does open up room for character development.
Somewhat excited for the next book.

I don't think I've read a book this fast. It was fantastic. I was one of the lucky few to be granted an ARC copy of this book. I do have a spoiler review ready and waiting for after the book realeases.
Don't let the 4 star fool you, I loved it but my personal opinion is that it was nearly perfect. This book was amazing, regardless of the fact that this is the authors debut novel! I'm already craving for the next in the series!

2.5/5
Was every character in this book made out of cardboard? It felt like it with the lack of personality from any of them.
It’s only getting 2.5 because there were some plot points I actually really enjoyed, just wish they had been further developed!

I was honoured to have been given an ARC copy of this book by Jaclyn Kot. I read the book in 2 days, which, for me is a record as I have 3 kids under 4.
I story was so well written and the characters develop so nicely that I stayed up most of the night just to finish this book without being disturbed.
Can't wait to get the physical book and also get the second in the series.

OMG! This one took me a minute to get read, but boy am I glad I did! This story is amazing!!
This book has good bones but the execution feels rudimentary and rushed. There is a lot of over-explaining amidst numerous lengthy MC monologues and her narration often falls flat. We get a few brief (and seemingly random) perspective shifts toward the end, but there is not much of a voice change between characters. I found myself skimming pages very frequently to move through the book at a pace that could keep my attention. Ultimately, I think this book could be monumentally improved with a meticulous editor.

I absolutely could not put this book down, it was an amazing read! I received this as an ARC for an honest review.
Sage is a character that I find easy to love and relate to. She has a found family whom of which she cherishes above all else. She is cursed, and stands on the precipice of wanting to stay alive and fighting back against the crowns extermination of people like her. To his credit, her brother Kaleb, does his fair share of keeping her on the "alive" side of the precipice.
Sage's life quickly descends into chaos as her brother is conscripted for a war, launching Sage into an escapade with tall, dark, and scary Von.
The supporting characters in the Rebel group are all developed well, and all fit well together as a second found family for Sage. I'm a sucker for when the guy is OBVIOUSLY obsessed with the girl first. It does become obvious who he really is (no spoilers here) but it didn't detract from the story. Same idea for Sage.
The world building was beautifully done, I felt like I was able to smell, feel, and see the things the characters were experiencing.
This book had a lot of slow burn smoldering, as well as an appropriate amount of spice; nothing felt added for the sake of a spicy pepper.
Again, this was an easy 5 star rating: I couldn't put it down, I will continue to recommend it, I'll buy the paperback when it's released, and I keep thinking about how much I already need book 2!
