Standalone crime thriller read by Joanne Froggatt and Matthew Horne. The majority is read by Froggatt I really enjoy listening to her voice, it’s very distinctive. She did great female voices which were different for each of the main characters. Her male voices however weren’t as good. But I still thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook.

What I loved about it is the three main characters investigating a historical crime which occurred 25 years previously are the ex detective who was in charge of the original case, a biographer of the convicted ki11er and the mother of a still missing child. They work closely with the police rather than it being a police procedural which is the reason that I think it resonated so much with me.

This is dark but without being overtly gritty or graphic. Its topic will be a trigger for some. I loved it, there’s such a high body count that there are always frequent reveals and the pace is kept rattling along.
I found it very entertaining, and would highly recommend listening.

Jonathan Egan Walsh is a serial rapist, kidnapper, and murderer. This isn’t a spoiler, spilt at the start of my review; we are introduced to him through his crimes within the book’s first few paragraphs. Walsh was about to snatch a young boy from his school playground whilst he was waiting for his mother. His mother is running late. This crime is stopped before it happens, and there was his introduction.

Walsh admits to taking, abusing, and killing the 13 boys whose remains have been found. He doesn’t help with the locating of them.

For 25 years, Diane Marshall has been desperate to know what has happened to her son, Zachery ‘Zac’ Marshall, who disappeared one evening and has never been found. Walsh has never told them what he did with Zac’s body.

Through the breakdown of her marriage and the splintering of her relationship with her other son, Diane is unable to move past that day.

Partway through the novel, the story changes direction, and nothing you thought you understood stands anymore.

I was utterly absorbed by this book. The narration was excellent, well performed and added to the story’s tone. I held my breath through so much of it I had to give myself breaks.

Clever twists that I wasn’t expecting, and although I thought I knew what happened to Zac, there was so much I didn’t know.

I would definitely recommend this book if you follow serial killer podcasts, horror fiction or enjoy dark reads.
