Beautiful but not as good as I'd heard. The endless, sweet nostalgia wore me down and it seemed never was anything experienced directly. At all times someone's relating what someone related to them. That grew tiresome as well.

This story includes many of my interests: historically based, it involves spies, intrigue, music (with great knowledge and insight of same), a bit of nordic noir, unrequited love (oh! the yearning, the focus!) and characters that interest me, whom I can champion. Plus it's Canadian and a prize-winner to boot. I was aware of "Us Conductors" in 2014 when it won the Giller, but it look another six years for me to read it. I'm glad I waited because my years of cello study made me a better reader of this novel. I'll miss the characters.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THIS BOOK! It's amazing.

I did not expect this to be anything special. I read it because it won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, but because I'm not interested in music, or fictional-historical dramas, so I did not expect a lot from this book. I started reading slower as I approached the end of the story. I just wanted to it last longer.

I got this as an audiobook from audible, and while it was enjoyable and I appreciated the different tactic to relay a story (it's first person written to Clara, whom he loves), I still found the plot slow. But I am going to go on a Wikipedia dive to learn more about him.

dnf- just couldn't get into it at this time
