one word comes to mind to sum up this book: gritty. this was real and raw and provocative. and i loved it.
damani is a rideshare driver in an unnamed city, caring for her mom after her dad’s death and trying too hard to keep a roof over their head. until she meets jolene, a white woman who is a self proclaimed activist. damani is head over heels until an act of betrayal forces her to finally fight back against the world.
i saw a couple people comment on the satire of this book, but i truly don’t read it like that. the political climates, the human flaws, the social aspects…it was all spot on and i see the realness the author pulled from. it felt completely true to the society we know.
the foreshadowing and backlight of the activism and protesting and demonstrations in this book was always looming and i knew it would all come to a head. this is to say, you could kind of feel what would happen but the narration and the writing made it so interesting and entertaining.
read this for the queerness, for the self reflection, for the mentions of palestine! go for it!

this book was definitely not for me. i’m getting really tired of all queer women in lit fiction novels being weird and always picking toxic women to date.
throughout this book, i felt that i didn’t really know damani and i just thought she was really annoying.

It took me a while to get into it, the writing style was something I wasn't used to. But my God. Every single moment was heartbreaking and perfect. Of course you know what's going to happen, but somehow it's still hard to believe it does. And then the whole rest of the book after the Big Moment is so chaotic and heartfelt.
Honestly? A must read for anyone who's ever uttered the phrase "I'm not racist" but has benefited from an oppressive system.
