This book mostly made me angry. Like, it's purposely demonstrating how wild a part of wealthy culture is, and it worked and it made me mad. I've decided private schools should be banned, including exclusive colleges. This is a problem that literally effects me not at all, but I wanted to yell at every single character. Like even the "good" characters were highly dislikable.

The way Maren dealt with her rapist was...questionable. I have no idea how I'd react in that circumstance, but this didn't feel realistic. idk, rape is terrible and awful, and date rape is just as bad. But she was so mean to Naomi, who literally for real had nothing to do with it.

Also, the gratuitous sexual exchanges between Alicia and her husband struck me as out of place and also unpleasant. So not a fan of that.

This was a neighborhood drama about the college admissions process at a small private school. Chapters focus on three parents: Alicia, CEO of a tech company, Kelly, a nosy helicopter mom, and Maren, Alicia’s assistant with little else to her name but her daughter. All the moms want their daughters to get in ED to Stanford but there is only a spot for one student at the private school. There is money, gossip, and betrayal as these moms will go to any extreme to get their daughters admission, even if it involves a car accident.
I did see it coming that Bryan, Alicia’s husband, hit Winnie with the car, but I did not see Maren using a burner phone to craft a text. It was kind of disappointing that none of the girls got into Stanford and they basically lied about Winnie’s admission to get Alicia to own up. Winnie goes to Cal Berkeley, Kelly’s daughter enrolls in Tulane after a summer of wilderness therapy, and Brooke Stone forgoes colleges and writes a NYT bestseller telling all about her family drama whole her mom is in jail.
Fans of Big Little Lies or Little Fires Everywhere would enjoy. I could already see Nicole Kidman as Alicia and Reese as Maren.

I loved that we heard this story from the point of view of the parents instead of the teens. I loved how complex each of the characters were and how they were all really well-rounded women with different goals and situations. This book explored privilege and how it affects each girls' college application situation really well. I thought it balanced the college drama, family drama, and the more mundane conflicts effectively.
I loved that the second half veered into Maren's assault and Winnie's meeting her father and saving her half-brother. It was so satisfying to see Alicia's downfall. I loved seeing all the elite parents be assholes because it reminded me of my high school experience and the town I grew up in.
This book was so easy to read and love.
