I really enjoyed the first book in a new series set in India (Calcutta) after World War I. It was face paced and a quick read. But I'm drawn in to start the next book. Besides the mystery to solve, Mujherjee writes of the politics of the time and the growing idea of Indian separatism from British rule. Also depicts the British treatment of the Indian people and their desire to keep them down in order to maintain British rule. But there are characters that are not swayed by color, including Detective Wyndham, and it was interesting to see his relationship develop with his Indian sergeant. A great read!

Enjoyable and entertaining book. The crime mystery is well thought out, although in some ways the ending seemed a bit rushed. The biggest strength of the book is the evocative description of Calcutta in the early 20th century. It provides the reader with a good idea of the atmosphere, as well as the political and social situation.

Colonial India in 1919 is the best place to hide, at least that's what Captain Sam Wyndham thought when he left England to join the Indian Police as a detective. His first case is the murder of a high-ranking civil servant, which throws up more than he bargained for.

What a fantastic book! Great story, lots of twists and turns like a detective novel should have. The backdrop of post-war India was fascinating, I loved the descriptions of the opulent white side of Calcutta contrasting with the political dissent rumbling under the surface.

Really good characters too, Sam is complex, moody and just the right side of sarcastic to lighten the mood of what must have been such a difficult job. Sergeant Banerjee, his Indian colleague offers a different view of the British Raj, but finding his white superiors lacking.

I can't wait for the next book in this series, I found myself wanting to know more about Captain Wyndham as he settles into his new life.

Great debut & start to the series.
The descriptions of 1919 Calcutta and it's people were great. Could really imagine things.
Loved the main two characters and look forward to seeing them develop as I read the rest of the series.
The plot was really interesting, the mix of political and personal reasons really kept me on my toes.
Highly recommend.

Pretty good historical mystery, specifically a police procedural. It was a bit plodding for much of it, though, with the main sleuth haring off after an obviously false trail. Good atmosphere though, and though the main character is a British police officer it's appropriately critical of British colonialism.
