If I could rate higher than 5 stars I would. This was such an amazing read!

What a ride! My head hurts while reading the story, I had so many questions. I liked the letters although I think that the letters were written in a modern tone not in an 1860’s tone.

This book tries to evenly split between the normal lives of the girls and the Mary incident, but it could have done entirely without any kind of drama. The first half drags, despite Mary being summoned in the first chapter, and doesn't really pick up until about three quarters of the way through. There were a ton of inconsistencies with Mary; a bunch of loopholes that, when brought up, would magically, suddenly have an explanation for. I didn't especially like any of the characters, as Jess was intolerable, Shauna was incredibly bland (especially for being the main character pov), and the other girls only seemed to be there out of convenience.

That being said, it's not an awful book. It's quick and has some spooky elements (nothing that genuinely scared me, but I think I'm completely immune to the horror genre in writing). I'll read the second book because I've heard better things about it.

So that's where this book ends, huh? That was REALLY abrupt

Otherwise, this was neat! It's fast paced and it really nails the fears and thoughts behind hating mirrors at night, like. I hate getting up to go to the bathroom late at night because I'm sure someone will be haunting the damn thing, and this book captures that experience

It also does a really good job of showing hopelessness and just being totally outclassed by a ghost. Even when Mary is just lingering and looking, her presence and the threat of coming to get ya is enough to be oogy and creepy. Very good vibes

But I was disappointed because everything was so fast paced that I didn't have time to get to know the characters. Even shauna didn't really exist outside of her haunting. There wasn't really a lot of depth to anyone except maybe jess, because she had a few moments where she looked like she'd be something other than the devil, you know? Shauna spent most of the book being afraid, and Anna and kitty just didn't really have memorable personalities. I barely knew anything about them as I was reading, you know? So the threats to them didn't have much impact because like. Ok well who are you.

But the complicated friendships between them all were really good! I liked seeing Anna and shauna cuddled up for safety and them fighting about what to do with their villains, you know? So there was potential, but MAYBE this and the sequel should have been combined so I could get to know the characters a little better. Still, other than the pacing issues and weird ending, I'd say this is really worth reading. It's not perfect but it was a good ghost story, and I'll probably read the sequel
