I always love it when a series has a satisfying ending. It doesn't have to mean happily ever after but I want the endings to fit. To make sense and to have a reason. They have to be worth the journey of getting there.

That's one of reasons I love this book. It has a satisfying ending. It's not the only reason though. I mean, there's sassy Alec (which, as it turns out, isn't a very good thing), there Clace, the demon other dimention, getting introduced to new characters and lots and lots of spoilers (meaning I can't tell you).

Ending was a bit too neat, and without spoiling it, after the fight and some political (and may be wrong) decisions, it ends with solving a problem too easy and too neat, also I saw that coming, and that is never a good sign for resolving a twist.
That could have been written better. Also there may be reason for several decisions or solutions to bite them later on. Still do not like Jace, my favorite characters are Clary, Izzy and Simon. Love and romance was so-so, could have done without some of it, Sex is mentioned, but mostly happening off-page.
No pesky love-triangle helps, though.

Fight scenes and the main story-line was great, although in my edition (Kindle ebook), the switch between POV from different persons was sometimes very sudden and not easy to find that it has switched and to whom, that should have been chapter-beginnings/endings.
As it is, the chapters where too long for fast reading with barely a break to stop reading - I just did stop, when something other came up, but it was not very practical, I often had to read paragraphs again to find the place where I stopped (without setting Bookmarks, I tend not to do that), maybe also a problem with the Kindle Voyage, where it is too easy to touch from a distance and page forward without wanting to - so it may be partly my fault.

Remembering the first 5 books, I think the Clary - Jace relationship was seriously grating on my nerves, the main reason for taking a break in reading the books. Although looking at the date of the review of the first 5 books, more when 2 years was rather too long and I skimmed the ending chapters of the book before to get into it, and that helped.

Highly recommended, for fans of the series, but you should have read the other books from the series before it.
If I had read it another time, I might give it 4 stars, as it is now, more like 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5, I feel like it.

As I disregard the problems others have with Cassandra Clare regarding probable lifting of ideas from other books, I have not really followed that discussion.
And I do not mind, if the source material is good (one of the reasons I am not sure, I will read 50 shades of grey - I did not like the creepy stalker series Twilight that much).

Overall, I enjoyed this wrap up to the series though it was seriously long and could have been cut back a bit. The introduction of Emma Carstairs (the protagonist in the next series) and the involvement of Tessa and Will from The Infernal Devices was a nice touch, but I did feel at times like there were almost too many character arcs to follow that were introduced in this book alone and not throughout the rest of the series. It is a pretty epic ending though and I enjoyed it and the series as a whole.

I will give you two quotes, one serious and one humorous.

Serious: “We are all the pieces of what we remember. We hold in ourselves the hopes and fears of those who love us. As long as there is love and memory, there is no true loss.”

Humorous: "Straight people," Alec declared. "Why can't they control themselves?"
"It's a mystery," Simon agreed.

If Cassandra Clare can do one thing, it's write a last book in a series. She takes these finales seriously and they seem to do irreparable emotional damage to me. This book had me crying over the "bad guy" dying. I never thought I'd be doing that. C. Clare knows what she's doing and people don't need to look down on her mastery of world building.

I don't know if I have enough words to put them together in the correct order to describe how this made me feel, but I will try. On the last book of a series I tend to do an overall series review added in so, here it is:

I did it, I finished The Mortal Instruments. I feel very accomplished in finishing the 9th Shadowhunter book of the many I will likely read. This book was the last one I had promised myself to when I told Alissa I would read them. The consensus is that I will keep going, but I will take a brief break first. I really didn't think I was going to love these books when I promised myself to it. I kinda thought I had missed the hype of it all and that I was too old. I have decided that one is never too old to enjoy The Shadowhunter Chronicles. It's emotional, humorous, victorious, and heartbreaking and truly is something worth reading (even if I did suffer through too much psuedo incest to get here.)

A break for now but onto the next soon enough...

I finished, phew ! That was my first thought as I turned to the last page. It wasn't that I didn't like it, it was a very good read. I was just tired of this story. It was like the house guest that stayed a week too long and drank all the coffee. Dang they had to go, yesterday. I'd had enough fun and games with Jace, Clary, Simon, Mangus, Alec and others a few books ago. I felt relief at the end, not for the characters but for me gaining my freedom from it. It really does sound like I didn't like it. The book was too long, IMHO.
The ending, well it was action packed, it was intense at times, good vs. evil war, truths revealed, hearts broken and then mended ( somewhat too easy on the latter), useless adults, and even some brief fade to black sex. The main characters all got their nice shinny endings wrapped in a pretty package. The bad, well they had coming what happens to bad things.
I had some issues with some changes in character traits to Magnus. He as just such a whinny wimp in this one. He's afraid, he's can deal with pain, he crumples, he offers himself up, he hide away, he hides from feelings. What happened did somebody steal his testosterone treatments ? His little Honey Boo Boo moments just didn't fit with my image of him from past books.
What did I like ? I like that it's over. (Omg, there it is again) I'm glad there was a resolution with all of them. It was nice that even with all the horrors that took place the gang all came out semi okay. I loved the wedding decorations, and the flowers. Ha ! read the book if you want t know who got married. I'm not telling. I liked the last minute of life for a certain nasty who deserved to die books ago.
At the end was a peek at a new series from the author. I didn't read it. I was afraid it would be yet another spin off from this one. Someday I may go back and read it. but I need a break after so many days reading this

3.5 more than 3.
The epilogue alone makes up for everything else!
