Emma and Ben are happily married living in NYC and expecting a baby. They love to watch scary movies together in bed. Then, Ben finds an abandoned home in upstate NY that has a haunted past. They decide to purchase it and undertake a major renovation. Emma starts seeing things and believing that Ben is being unfaithful. Many strange things happen in the house and between people in the town.
And then, wham - a bizarre ending to the whole story, which upends everything.
Disappointed in this one, as the story could have been much better. I liked all the movie references, but the rest of the story fell flat for me.

This was such a huge disappointment! It was decently developed and then it was okay. I felt like the author had a random thought and then just wrote a story with no actual development in the story or for the characters. The last chapter made me want to throw this book out the window.

If you choose to pick up this book, do yourself a favor and follow these instructions.

Get a physical copy.

Before reading even a page, turn to page 255.

Rip out everything from 255 on. Crumple it up, set it on fire, use it as cat litter, just forget it ever existed.

Easily takes this from a 1.5 star read to maybe a low 3 star.

Trust me.

Slow start, Emma is an unreliable and sporadic narrator which makes her a bit hard to follow. The plot also just doesn’t make sense, there’s so many “twists” that you never really understand the motivations behind the antagonists actions. Skip the last chapter, it’s supposed to be some wild revelation but it makes no sense to the rest of the story.

Overall, this was a good read. I won’t do a full review right now but have a question to pose to anyone else who has read this book. Did the last chapter titled ‘accident’ seem out of place or confusing? It’s the very last chapter of the book….. if it wasn’t for this last chapter, I would give this book a solid 4 stars.

A Simple Favor is one of my favorite books (and movie adaptations), so I was so excited when I saw this at Target. The premise is fantastic and so spooky - a run down house with a shady history in a remote area? Yes, please.

For most of the book, I was hooked. I loved the ominous atmosphere, and the house itself was a compelling character. Discovering more and more about the houses history was fascinating, and I loved the back and forth between Emma in the present, and Emma reading about the past. I also love an unreliable narrator, and Emma is for sure that. This book could basically be used as a definition of what gaslighting looks like, and although gaslighting sucks irl, reading about it is fun.

I do have some issues though. The first, which may be trivial, is that I kept questioning Emma’s doctors and her internal mental response to pregnancy. Maybe I’m wrong, but I feel like passing out and hallucinating are not typical pregnancy symptoms, but everyone seemed to just brush it off? Second, I didn’t like the different perspectives towards the end, as I don’t think it fit in with the final chapter. However, the final chapter was interesting, and was definitely a twist that I did not see coming at all (although I was then instantly confused about how the different POV’s were even possible).

All in all, I enjoyed it, but I definitely wouldn’t consider it as high up on my list as A Simple Favor. Like A Simple Favor, though, I do think it would make an excellent adaptation to the screen, and I would love to see it!
