i don’t know that this succeeded in exactly every single thing it tried to accomplish, but it was so ambitious and original and invigorating that i don’t think i really mind

I found it hard to connect to the characters. Not that they weren’t relatable, but we just didn’t get anything deep from them. I really liked the plot and world building but wanted more in terms of character development.
Interesting but all the different pov’s were confusing in the audiobook I read the first quarter via. Eye reading helped keep the characters straight. I liked the idea of bonding via tech.
i really don’t know where i got this book from tbh it was on my shelf so i must have bought it at some point but i really can’t remember when
anyway this was labeled as a dystopian scifi and it really fits that term. it generally reminded me a lot of ‘Borne’ by Vandemeer as it is also set in a post-apocalyptic society that was destroyed by social unrest, climate crisis & corruption. other than Borne, however, this book was mostly set in a city, which functions as a refugee camp for those who lost their homes due to crisis. it is way overcrowded though, pollution and poverty are everywhere. that gets even more severe by the so called ‘shareholders’ who manage rent prices and cause a majority of the people to stay on the streets. basically, tenants are the ultimate villains of the story, i love that.
the main plot discusses the story of several individuals who at first don’t have anything in common but are (re)united through a common goal. it makes the book a tale of love, family and what happens when you never give up on both of these things.
such a unique story, albeit a bit hard to grasp at times. i would recommend it for everyone who is either a fan of dystopian scifi, post-apocalyptic fiction or just likes the weirder stories.

Shut up, everybody.
In this book, a lady rides an orca and has a polar bear for a sidekick.
If that's not enough to convince you to buy the book, then your time is running out.
Orca. Polar bear. You really need to take a hard look at your reading choices.
"Blackfish City" is a detailed look at a future Earth after we messed it up, and author Sam J. Miller brings the society thereupon to life. The human drama balances with the sheer fun that Miller appears to be having in creating. The story focuses on love and family, but also on action and adventure.

This book was so cool. The writing is gorgeous, the world-building is ambitious, the characters feel so real, and the plot… well, there wasn’t as much of it as I usually want. But in this case I didn’t care, because there was just so much imaginative development and visceral description. A perfect combination of science and magic, social commentary, dystopia and utopia, groundedness and absurdity.
"Fine line between good business and a fucking warcrime," he said. "Ain't that the goddamn epitaph of capitalism?"
