Reading this was like walking through patchy fog. I could figure out what was going on maybe 60% of the time but then out of nowhere someone's head would get cut off. [Not a spoiler - you don't know WHOSE head.] I felt like the flashes of insight I gained here and there were what kept me in it until the end, but it largely seemed like the author was being needlessly coy. Or I just didn't grasp what he was trying to do.

good to know landlords never change even with the end of the world as we know it

A beautiful mess of a novel!

I loved this book! Starts off with a number of different stories of different characters. Then the stories converge into a whole story. Some of the characters come together. Some die and come together anyway. And it all culminates in a glorious, chaotic, unexpected end. I found myself seeing the end approach without a clue as to how it was going to end. Then the felt so much like this was the only way it could have ended!

3.5 star rating.

I thought the story and content was very interesting. However, I found the writing style fairly hard to follow. I had to re-read sections of each “chapter” / character pov to try and figure what part if the storyline I was at.

Otherwise, still a good book and worth a read.

Ps. If you have a hard cover, the dust sleeve glows in the dark!

the LGBTQ element was good - don't think I've read a book quite this gender fluid before. some engaging characters too. The city/universe was believable and compelling: very diverse, very Asian.
The animals were cool and I do like a story that begins and ends with the same sentence. (cyclical structure my clever daughter informs me)
Unfortunately when the story finally kicked in it was a bit bollocks.

Blade Runner meets the Golden Compass. I think this could have been a series, the conclusion was not satisfactory, but the world building was excellent.
