The audiobook for Aetherbound was great, despite the story being pretty miserable. It's heavy on YA and light on sci-fi, with far more trauma and abuse than necessary.

What a weird book. There were parts of it I liked but a lot of it was just kind of confusing and didn’t make much sense. The world building was strange to me and I still don’t full understand the nets and the wells and the Hegemony and the rebellion and whatever.

In addition, I didn’t love the pacing of the book. There were these brief (BRIEF) blips of action surrounded by pages and pages of nothing happening. But on the plus side the book isn’t very long so…?

I liked Pendt as a character overall, but again she doesn’t make much sense to me. I would have figured that she would be a lot more timid given that she was severely abused on board the Harland.

Overall, just kind of a weird space book and I’m not really even into space books in the first place.

A fairytale in space. That’s what Aetherbound is. And it’s a very good fairytale as well. It is about Pendt Harland is a girl who can connect to the Aether, but not in the way her Aunt / Captain wishes. Only Star Sense is truly valued, while Electro-sense is tolerated. Pendt has Grain-Sense and as a result she is deemed worthless and is only kept alive until she is old enough to be sold into marriage. Before this can happen she escapes onto Brannik Station and encounters Ned— who wants to leave and join the Rebellion but can’t because his genes are the only thing keeping the station and it’s people save; and Fisher— who wants to run the station but can’t because he doesn’t have the right genes to do so. Pendt is a gift to them both, as they are to her. Together, they get all they ever wanted, and more.

A great four star read.
