Esio Trot

he just gaslit her and gave away her pet?? wtf

The heartwarming story of gaslighting with tortoises.

A tale of deceit and obsession to rival Alfred Hitchock's Vertigo. One of Dahl's weakest books with a very questionable moral. I think the reader easily understands why Mr. Hoppy stayed single for so long. Lock up your tortoises: there's a balcony bachelor on the loose.

Even een uurtje voorlezen aan Jonah.

This was a kind of funny and clever story. But it’s also about a man who manipulates a woman into marrying him and steals her pet.

Two uses of that great British word, titchy, in the span of a 60-page book, but that is the only nice thing I have to say about it. This is a story about a man who likes a woman and chooses to go completely out of his way to deceive her into thinking he is knowledgeable about tortoises (esio trot is “tortoise” backward) and then his deceit leads to them getting MARRIED and then that’s it, that is the book. No commentary at all on the fact that he completely lied to her, not to mention stole her tortoise and replaced it with others.

Grade: A-

I am basing my rating for these childhood books on how much I enjoyed them when I read them as a child.
