not everything in life is fair.

the popularity of certain roald dahl books and lack of popularity of others is, though.

because what on earth was this?

part of a series i'm doing in which i review books i read a long time ago

Ella and I have been reading Roald Dahl books for the first time. She loves this one, Thomas (15) in the background offering commentary - “so what he’s saying is that in order to get someone to love you you have to lie to them” Thanks for that son!

I thought I remembered this story having actual magic in it but I must've been mistaken. Kids I read this with loved it, but I thought it was a bit meh. Kind of funny and sweet, but also Mr Hoppy lied the whole time and had no repercussions?

Happy lies. :)

Ah, this was so cute. I wasn't even really aware that this book existed but I watched Roald Dahl's Most Marvellous Book on Channel 4 and they mentioned this book and I thought it sounded sweet and it so was!

What can you expect from a marriage that started this way? HAHAHHA
I'm not even mad. It's a silly story, and we can learn something about this... DON'T be like Mr Hoppy.

Loving someone you've never even properly met? Winning affection with deceit and never coming being honest?

Justice for Alfie!!

What can I say about this book? Short, cute, romantic, funny and all around awesome!

Roald Dahl has a magic pen and has always created the most lovely children's stories, filled with morals and life lessons, disguised in each adventure.

Very problematic that the protagonist basically tricks a woman into marrying him, and it's all portrayed as clever and sweet. Didn't expect this from Dahl. Two stars only because the tortoise gets a happy ending.

This was cute enough, but not as sharp or nearly as good as his others.
