Oh...I was unconscious and you took off all my clothes??? giggle giggle giggle
Err....no...not funny. Kind of rapey.
I might have liked this book more if Addison wasn't such an idiot and her love interest wasn't so creepy.

The main character is somewhat cringe worthy but nothing I couldn't forgive. It's Nick who ruined the whole thing. Their scenes completely lacked chemistry and he was not only cringe but, at the risk of sounding overly woke, he was creepy and bordered on the rapist brand of creepy a lot. Seriously their "sex" scenes almost made me sick everything about him was icky. I'm serious if SA/SA adjacent content is a trigger for you do not read this book.
Secondary characters were a lot more interesting than the main character and by the end I was disappointed I didn't get to spend more time with Rose Marie and Addison's mother.

I felt like this book couldn't decide if it was a Harlequin bodice-ripper or an introduction to a new detective series character. At first, Addison Holmes seemed hilariously relatable, but I quickly got tired of hearing about her hair, makeup, and outfits when they didn't really further the story. As a reader, I know Murphy's Law exists, but c'mon! The extreme ridiculousness of some of the things that happened to Addison wouldn't be funny in a sitcom with a laugh track.
Her interactions with Nick weren't really believable considering the circumstances under which they met and his entrances and exits were more like dream sequences or wishful thinking. There was, at least, one continuity error/conversation when Addison is with Kate and Nick appears that really made no sense, it was like the scene was cut from something larger and the information to tie the scenes together was sent down the Well of Lost Plots.
There was very little character development and nothing to entice me to pick up the next book in the series, not even the teaser chapter at the end. Where are the strong, competent female detectives? Maybe the series should be more about Kate.

Another 3.5 that could have been 4 with better editing. Missing words and incorrect homophones occasionally detracted from the story but it reminded me a bit of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Will read the next one at some point.

I wanted something light and fluffy to read after a fairly heavy and serious book and this certainly filled the bill. Not much substance to it, although not a bad mystery. Just not my style. And trying too hard to be funny. I don't even know why I gave it 2 stars. But there you are.

Anyone that enjoys Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series will probably enjoy this too. There are quite a few similarities - down on her luck main character that starts working for a friend investigating some goings on in her home town, a hot detective to get involved with and an arch nemesis to spar with as well. Add in the fact that she is extremely accident prone and you end up with a fun ride that has a few laughs along the way.
