Great book, great read, brilliant story.
Yes the main character is unlikeable, yes she makes choices no sane person would make. Then again how often does one get a cryptic note from a barista? Who knos how ‘a sane person’ would react to these insane situations? As VanderMeer states, no-one knows how they will react in all thinkable situations, because they never find themselves in all these situations.

Is this story needs to be situated related to other works I’d say it has the style of TV series like ‘Mr. Robot’ and ‘Chloe’. Never completely know what is going on, but the hints we do get show that something enormous is at stake. Thematically this could be a precursor to Octavia Butlers Parable of the Sower.

Tragedy upon tragedy, unputdownable sci fi, haven’t read anything as compelling in years.

Mixed feelings. 15% awesome weird classic VanderMeer and 85% poorly written spy novel. Some very interesting and poignant stuff as you'd expect, but (maybe?) an attempt to be more accessible to a mainstream thriller audience isn't the right dynamic. But hey, as Silvina knows, ya gotta be willing to try a wide variety of strategies.

Mysterious fever dream meets climate crisis

DID NOT FINISH: 38%

Very self-serious, clunky writing. Absolutely glacial pace. I wanted to like this but became too frustrated.

+
A good thriller: plenty of twists and turns.
An interesting setting: end of the world by ecological disaster.

-
An unlikable, unreliable narrator.
Unlikable characters all around. Just a world of terrible people.
Terse and dry prose.
