“I no longer think, as I once naively did, that we have much to learn directly from the Romans - or, for that matter, from the ancient Greeks, or from any other civilization...I am more and more convinced that we have an enormous amount to learn - as much about ourselves as about the past - by engaging with the history of the Romans, their poetry and prose, their controversies and arguments.”

Look, I learned a lot, but it felt like homework. Mary Beard is brilliant, no doubt, but this was more history lecture than page-turner. Some cool Roman facts sprinkled in, but I wanted a little more drama, a little less date memorization. Great for history buffs, though.

I absolutely loved the narrative of this intriguing book about the beginnings of Rome as a republic and an empire, from 753 BCE to the second-third century CE. Mary Beard does an amazing job describing her theories of Roman policies and behaviors through the available evidence that we have today. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly curious about the famous civilization of Rome and it's legacy throughout history.
Very informative, didn’t feel confusing other than trying to remember all the names and dated and such. This was an easily digestible and breezy read, didn’t focus as much on the empire/emperors specifically as I had thought it would but that’s a small gripe
