An exciting Hercule Poirot mystery set in a girls' boarding school, although the famous detective doesn't appear until towards the end of the story.

A new sports pavilion has been built at a prestigious girls's school, and a new Games Mistress hired. A few weeks into term, she's found dead. She wasn't very well liked, but was that enough for someone to kill her? Finally, one of the students thinks she might know why, and she goes to see her mother's friend Poirot, to have him solve the mystery.

As always, Dame Christie had me guessing who did it, until the very end, and of course, I was wrong! The story is suspenseful, witty, and a bit satirical, exciting and fun.

International intrigue and murder! Characters developed so well. Another great read, and I loved the narration of Hugh Fraser!

An excellent Christie novel checked off my list of reading all the Hercule Poirot books in order! As usual, I was thrown off by the red herrings and didn’t guess who the murderer was, and was quite surprised when it was revealed. My only complaint is that as I’m nearing the end of the Poirot books, he seems to be showing up in the stories later and later. Ah well, maybe that’s preparing me for when I come to the end and have to continue reading the non-Poirot mysteries!

2.5/5

This is the September read of the #ReadChristie2021 challenge. I liked the school setting on this, and the mystery is entertaining. However, at times the plot felt a little convoluted - there were a lot of characters to keep track of - and we don't see Poirot at all until the last quarter of the book.

A Christie mystery is always enjoyable, but I enjoyed this one a bit less than others. It was in chapter 17 of 26 that Hercule Poirot appears, and once he was on the scene the mystery was solved pretty quickly. Eh. Another issue was too many characters and not enough character development. Bottom line, if Poirot is going to be in it, bring him in early on and give us plenty of moustache styling and the little gray cells.
