This was a decent start to the series. I've never read anything by Orson Scott Card, so it's a little weird. I'm definitely getting some weird vibes from this, but I have to admit I'm pretty intrigued by everything that is going on. I'd give it 3.5 out of 5 stars, the biggest detractor was the whole Lana situation. It was just plain gross, and I didn't understand why it needed to be in the story at all. It felt like it was added for the shock factor, but it wasn't just shocking. It was disturbing.
I read about 60% of the story and it just couldn’t keep my attention. It’s not poorly written or anything but story itself just didn’t keep my attention. I didn’t care for it even though I love mythology. I didn’t finish the book so I can’t give complete overall thoughts on it but I’d say your most likely not going to enjoy it too much if don’t like slow books
This book was recommended to me and I put off reading it. But now that I'm done I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The plot picks up faster than I thought it would which is probably one of the main reasons that I was willing to read it so quickly.
Danny is witty and funny my favorite type of a character. He's really the main reason I was interested in this book and I'm glad he met my expectations. He makes stupid choices but he really doesn't know any better. By the end of the book, he seems to understand that he needs to shape up a little but he's still a teenager so his thoughts may not translate into the right actions.

It's interesting to see Card deviate away from sci-fi to a blend of fantasy and modern day. The story is still gripping, but unfortunately lacks the philosophical questions to ponder that were in the Ender series.
Short review: This is the best book I have read by Card in a while. He almost always writes about young boys/teens. Card seems to have a special gift at that. This is a modern fantasy that explains the gods of the ancient world. The magic has been diminishing for a while because the gates to the other world where cut off by Loki (the Norse god) about 1400 years ago.
Danny has the power to restore the gate, but the Mages are not sure that it should be restored. So he is on the run, being encouraged by a few and hunted by the rest.

Audiobook. Not recommended. OSC is hit or miss and this is a big creepy miss. It's just a mess of sexual ooze. With his daughter narrating half of the book, it made those scenes more uncomfortable.
The magic system is interesting, if only half-baked. OSC started with the question, "how do I write a YA novel?" and landed with this... Attempt.

I have yet to be disappointed by an Orson Scott Card book. I recommend this if you're into fantasy worlds full of magic and mythic qualities. The aspect of this book that seems to polarize some readers is how descriptive the author gets about the magic system. You will have page after page describing how the main character is developing his magical abilities. Personally I enjoy that but I can see how others would not.
It was interesting to read this book right after Pathfinder. One has a protagonist with the ability to travel through space and the other has a protagonist with the ability to travel through time. They both feel like the beginning of a series, and both coincidentally feature a protective baker. I think both books were a little unsatisfying in the end because it was the beginning to a series, but we'll have to see how they turn out. Even if it doesn't get finished it'll still be better than Lovelock.
