I greatly enjoyed this book. As a lover of mythology I greatly enjoyed the world that the author delivered. I also really loved the personalities of Danny's family, as it felt well matched to the gods they were meant to resemble. Often times I have read books where similar characters acted with current morals and attitudes. The end result being that it felt far less authentic, where in this book I felt more drawn in. Greatly looking forward to part two.

This was a fun book that felt like a OSC version of Micheal Scott's attempt to create a pan-cultural narrative encompassing all of the mythological deities from history in the Nicolas Flamel books. You can also compare it to Marvel Comic's version of the Norse God myths in Thor. Either way, it is a fun and imaginative book. I was disappointed and thought the author ended it too soon and too quickly without developing Loki well enough, but I am certainly anxious for the next book so I am sure his publisher appreciated it. Great job Mr. Card.
The story line was really good and creative. Orson Scott Card did a wonderful job yet again! However, the book deals with an adolescent boy who has been very sheltered and is then introduced to the world, so there are a few sexual conversations (this is why i rated it as a 4 star rather than a five star book). I personally think its a little awkward, but other than that stuff the book really is interesting. I was really sad to discover (at the end of the book) that it was a series cause now I have to wait for the next one.
Mildly interesting, but after a while (more than 2/3 read) , I realized I just wasn't really interested in what was happening in the book.
I liked this book. I felt like the pace was a bit slow but I tend to feel that way about Orson Scott Card's books. And usually it isn't really that they are slow but rather that they have a very deliberate pace that is necessary for the story but I am so drawn into the plot that I am constantly wanting to race ahead to the end. But as is usually the case, I find that OSC's pacing forces me to slow down and enjoy the nuances and character development and scenery. In the end, I am forced to admit that despite the fact that I am compelled to speed through it, he is right to draw it out and make me wait.
I had always thought of OSC as a sci-fi writer because my first introduction to him was through the Ender's Game universe. I was very excited to see he wrote fantasy as well. If you like fantasy and you like OSC then chances are good that you will like this book. It is very much in OSC's style. Interesting and engaging and plot driven but also philosophical and character driven. The mechanics/theory of magic is different and well thought out and interesting to think about while musing over the possibilities and opportunities. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Looking back I don't think I cared much for the begging of this book but, after a few chapters in it opened up and has became a must read for lovers of magic in books!
Interesting story! I like the way he wove the legends/myths from so many cultures into the story. I look forward to the next in the series.
