A Book of Spirits and Thieves is the newest book by bestselling author Morgan Rhodes, and while the story is imaginative, the fault lies within the lack of character.

*4.5 stars
Normally Rhodes' books are solid 4 star reads for me but I was really impressed with this books improvements in comparison to her first three books. I think her writing got stronger. She did better with showing not telling which was a problem I had in her earlier books though it still wasn't perfect. I connected with the characters quickly as well which was also an issue I had before. The pacing really impressed me personally and I have zero complaints about that. She does that well most of the time and her plots are very well thought out and engaging, not to mention the plot twists I never saw coming!
I kept theorizing and was wrong every time but I think that's good, I hate too much predictability. Excited for the sequel!

not as good as the falling kingdom series. not sure if I will be finishing this series
I couldn't get into this book. Even at the end I was still waiting for something to happen. The next book seems a bit chunkier so ill give it a try. fingers crossed!
I want to start this off with saying I enjoyed this book a lot. Morgan Rhodes' books always drag me in and do not let me ago until I finish them. They're fast-flowing, full of humour and magic and fun to read.
I do want to start off with positive notes:
I enjoyed the book plenty, the story never quite bored me and I finished it quite fast.
The dialogues are well written. Rhodes is magnificent in balancing humour with the right kind of suspense.
I liked Maddox's chapters the most. They filled in more of the world-building of Mytica and its magical realm. I also liked Maddox's character, naïve but kind and adorkable. It was different to Rhodes' usual brooding, dark, deceitful, handsome heroes (I'm looking at you Magnus). It also made me like Becca and Maddox’s bond. Although a lot of times cheesy, it at least showed chemistry between the two, something I found lacking in many relationships introduced in the Falling Kingdoms-series.
But….
I went into this book expecting the same seriousness and suspense I received from the Falling Kingdoms-series (note: I haven’t read Immortal Reign yet) but I don’t think I received it. This book didn’t feel as heavy or serious, perhaps it’s the chapters set in our world that threw me off. I would’ve easily loved the book twice as much would it have been set fully in the realm of Mytica.
I didn’t like Crystal’s chapters. They felt like mere exposition for the story. They (almost) never drove the story forward. However I did enjoy her character as mush as the others. I also noticed Morgan (maybe subconsciously) formed Crys and Farrell’s connection a little close to resembling another popular duo in the Falling Kingdoms-series. I enjoyed their behaviour towards one another but I hope that it won’t resemble Magnus and Cleo too much in the sequel, it needs to be different in my opinion.
Overall I like the start of this new series. It had good characters, enough entertainment and a solid enough plot to serve us new world-building. It felt like I was reading Morgan Rhodes’ own fanfiction about her own created world. I do not mean that in a bad way, I love reading fanfiction. It filled in the gaps, gave me a nostalgic feeling to the original series and was well enough written that I never found it bland or boring. I enjoy that the most of Rhodes’ her books.
I know the third book of the series has been delayed indefinitely. I find it unfortunate, although not as suspenseful as Falling Kingdoms, I did enjoy it and I hope after reading the sequel that some day the publisher will give Morgan the chance to end this series in style.

It's great and a phenomenal start to what can be an amazing series. The characters were beginning to be developted and it's already awesome.
This book remindes me a lot of falling Kingdom just because if the next book is done write it can be great but if not it can be awfull. This is tipe of book you like the first time you read it, but when you've read the reast of the series you love so much more.
However, I loved it all the same as I have loved all of the Morgan Rhodes' books I've read in the past.

This definitely did not hook me like Falling Kingdoms did right off the bat, but I have finally towards the end of the book become more attached to the characters and the story.
