So this was yet another Backman masterpiece - filled with an array of Dickensian characters who made you laugh and cry simultaneously. As the narrator states, this is a book about idiots, just a group of idiots trying their best to make it through the day.

You cannot pick a single genre to define this novel - it is a comedic, grief-stricken, romantic crime novel, and at times becoming utterly fantastical. As you are going through the story you are torn between wondering whether the plot is intrinsically complex, or so simple that it’s baffling. You can’t help but laugh and pity the poor father/son police officers who are being led a merry dance as the other characters do their best to baffle them. The witness statements and descriptions of “Stockholmers” had me laughing out loud.

But there are so many deeper aspects within the story; about old age and loneliness, about the political and economic climate, about death and grief, and also about the true nature of love in all its forms.

All I can say is that I continue to adore this writer, and can’t wait to read book number 5!

this book was so hard for me to get into initially, but once I committed to it, I was blown away. Backman wove together the threads of so many stories so beautifully. I was shocked and laughed and teared up. he also does an outstanding job at truly bringing characters to life, in a way that I ended up feeling like I know them personally and have for a long while. the story dealt with death and life and everything in between in an impeccable way. highly recommend!

One of the best reads ive had in years. Funny as hell and hit the feels many times.
