I really like Kiley Reid’s first book, Such a Fun Age, so I had this one on my TBR list for several months. It really picked up in the last 50 pages or so, but I found myself dragging through it up until then. If I hadn’t been reading it as a part of book club (thanks Ellen for making a book club of two with me!!), I might have given up. I still think the author has a great writing style — her prose is very natural and easily gets into the minutiae of daily life. However, that focus on daily life can seem quite meandering without hints as to how all the pieces will tie together.

Like I said, things tied together in the end and I was emotionally invested enough in some of the characters to make the tension feel real. I wish the author hadn’t waited until the very end to tie all the loose threads together and had done a bit more throughout the story to set up the pieces in a more propulsive way.
