Divine Rivals

I read this book because of peer pressure. Normally I don’t read this type of story, but I really enjoyed it! The writing was beautiful and the characters were lovable and fun. It had the perfect amount of fantasy so that I (as a fantasy novice) wasn’t overwhelmed by it.

I saw someone on tik tok describe this book as a romance with a side of fantasy, and that is exactly what this is.

Divine Rivals started off as a work place rivals to lovers romance that quickly turned into a magical war romance.

I am not a fan of the reasons behind the war. This is not a political book, but I still found it enjoyable. What this book does well is developing the Iris and Roman’s romance. It was refreshing to read a character like Roman. He is vulnerable and weak in ways that most fantasy romance love interests are not. I live the magic type writers, and just the idea that they’re both journalists.

Overall, its an enjoyable book. I wouldn’t say the writing is amazing though. There are so many info dumps, and all the side characters are very 2 dimensional. I also think the god war is so stupid. If the author wanted a war love story, she should have developed the reason for the war better.

Idk how to rate this book. I enjoyed it a lot but objectively its weak. Im gonna go with 3.5 stars for now.

This is one of the most pure love stories I’ve ever read. Academic rivals to lovers with magical typewriters and a deadly war between gods….this was everything!!!

The writing is so poetic and powerful. It drew the emotion out of me effortlessly. I felt everything these characters felt❤️‍

I get the hype over this book. Once I got to about 25%, I couldn't put it down. It gave me The Hating Game but fantasy vibes for a while there.

I really enjoyed both main characters and all the side characters. I also liked that the author didn't make anyone so overpowered like a lot of fantasy novels like to do. I really felt like I could relate somewhat to these characters.

There's a lot of talk about the gods and history. It's not confusing at all. Ross does an amazing job explaining everything.
