Marlow and Adrius completely give me Veronica Mars vibes. It's that push and pull type of relationship where they're on different sides, but can't stay away. In a lot of ways, I guess their relationship was one of the more interesting things in this book as it was also the kind of frustrating part.

The overall story of destroying the Grimoire was interesting and I enjoyed that part and the scheming, but it also didn't seem as interesting as it could be. Like was the book too long to drag it out? Which is kind of ironic for me to say because I totally thought this was a trilogy until like 80% into the book. But in hindsight, I think maybe it was a little long. Everything is very convoluted with who is involved with what and the factions. The story did keep me interested, but I think it's also I lived for Marlow and Adrius to see how that was going to resolve.

I thought the end was okay. The end and what Marlow did wasn't exactly a surprise and the type of thing she did is definitely not a new literary device, but it worked overall.

I am glad that Marlow stuck to her guns, though, for the end. While it was somewhat sad (maybe not as much for the reader), I'm glad she stuck it out.

Overall, I enjoyed the duo. It's enough fluff to be fun, but enough plot to be interesting.

I enjoyed this world (the magic and the tension) but so much of the drama was contrived. The over-arching idea was great but any little plot point was annoying to me.

Just as one issue gets solved, another bigger problem falls into Marlow's lap. Not only is she being charged for the murder of Adrius's father, her own newly revealed father has even greater plans for the future of Evergarden and the Marsh. Good thing Marlow has plenty of grit, determination, and hex cards to go around. She has a really good friend in Swift (with his side story it was cute and he deseves it after all the pain he went through with being coerced to work for the Copperheads) and others play a bigger part, from Silvan, to Gemma, and the useful Fisher. I definitely would want her on my side, even if sometimes she should be paying more attention instead of sneaking off to meet Adrius (though they still have their issues). But I mean since they are both eighteen, I guess that makes sense. And she really is quite mature in most respects (especially with that decision at the end!)

Many curses in this book and of course the Grimoire plays a big part because it has more than just compelling people spells. It was a great sequel (picking up right where the first book ended) and a satisfying conclusion that does not include the destruction of the city, corrupt though it may be. And I really enjoyed reading it (no slow parts in this book!)
