I thought the book was great a definite a worth a read if you are into books about Tortoises. I thought it was okay even though it was written by an amazing author because there is a man who is retired but still loves his neighbour who also seems to also be retired.
HOWEVER, with that being said, the book was more romantic in a way than the man having a love for tortoises. I think that the excursion of all this, the book is about a man who is attracted to a lady he has a crush on from the flat below and not all about tortoises but buying them for his love interest.

Funny idea, cute drawings, mostly fun story. But the deception of a woman to get her to marry you? And stealing her beloved pet without her knowledge? Made me sad to think about.

This was my kids’ rating… actually they wanted to give it a half star. They loved Giraffe, Pelly and Me… but hated this book. My sons are 6 and 8, for reference. They enjoyed the story and giggled along for the first few pages- but were indignant by the end. They were hoping *spoiler* paid for their misdeeds, was found out, and died alone in disgrace.
This is a book that was written, and I read it. kind of an underwhelming finish to my Big Dahl Read, but what are you going to do?

I liked this book, but it teaches pretty horrible morals. I don't think books always need to teach us something, though, so if you read for the story and not for moral lessons, then you will probably like this book.
I'm surprised how many people bash this book for being offensive to women and for supposedly teaching kids to lie and manipulate people. Here's what I have to say to that: it's just a silly little story. Get over it! Not every book has to have some earth-shattering moral. I mean, if we're judging all kids things by that standard, then Looney Tunes must be the anti-Christ of all that is supposed to be moral and proper. Some things are meant to be enjoyed for its silliness and absurdity, and this is one of them.
