A short tale about a shy, old man who wins the heart of a woman by lying and coning her. Read it to my daughter. Let this be a cautionary tale for her!

First time I read this book I had problem with the conceot. It really irritated me and stood on my way of enjoying this book.
Now, in my next reread.. I don't mind them as much, and I was able to enjoy the story, but I'd still not read it to kids- I think.

It's a book about gaslighting and lying to marry someone. Big yikes. Also Alfie went from a lush house with lovely hay to living in a box in a shed with leaves? Do not try and tell me he had an upgrade. Thanks to the manipulative Mr Hoppy he went from an extremely loving home to a home of a woman who keeps him in the shed.

Non condivido l'inganno usato per conquistare la signora levandole la cara Alfio senza che lei lo sappia.

Roald Dahl never fails.

Well, as others have said, this book tells us that we can build love and long-term relationships by lying to the people we are in love with. Whatever, it was still a funny Roald Dahl book. I mean, if I never liked anything that was kind of silly or set a bad example, I wouldn't like James and the Giant Peach because James talks back, or I wouldn't like A Wrinkle in Time because Meg destroys authority, or...you get the picture. Not one of Dahl's best, but I liked it. And I read it in about 20 minutes. The whole book. I'd let my kids read it, if I had kids. I think kids are smart enough to know that Mr. Hoppy was kind of ridiculous.

That was quick. While I do understand where all the negative reviews are coming from, I am more inclined to say that it's just the typical Roald Dahl style. A low four stars.

2018 I've never read Roal Dahl read a thon

I'm starting to think that Dahl's books are not meant for lessons learned.
It's a cute story, but there are no repercussions for the lie Mr. Hoppy tells.
