Esio Trot

Roald Dahl

3.51 AVERAGE

I will never not love Roald Dahl. His stories are what started my love of reading, and I'm so grateful to have received a partial collection of his works to read through this year.

Esio Trot is just as lighthearted and adorable as I expected it to be. Plus Quentin Blake's drawings just wash over me in pure nostalgia.

This is cute, funny, and kept all 3 of my kids (ages 3-7) totally entertained through the whole book in one sitting (about 60 pages). I tried to stop in the middle, but everyone begged for me to go on. THis is one we will re-read frequently. Stay away if you wouldn't like the fact that the old man in the story gets away with tricking the woman he loves into falling in love with him and never confesses this to her.

We had a big car trip planned and since the kids have both shown an interest in audio books I purchased a set of [a:Roald Dahl|4273|Roald Dahl|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1311554908p2/4273.jpg] stories on CD. When I was looking through them I was surprised to see one that I'd never even heard of (given that I'd ravenously devoured everything else Mr Dahl has written when I was growing up), so we listened to it.

It's a very short story and didn't end at all as I expected. It seemed to be missing the usual Dahl-darkness, which isn't to say it was lacking in any way, I greatly enjoyed it, as did the kids, but I was surprised, especially when it finished all of a sudden (which is a trick audio books can pull on you that their more traditional physical brethren can not).

Certainly there's no moral here, if anything, it's egregiously and unashamedly immoral, but Mr Dahl was never a stickler for social mores!

- Fun read! There is no message or lesson to learn here. This book is just for pure entertainment.

- Gnome and I enjoyed this book so much. We finished it in two sittings. It is really short and has lots of pictures, so it wasn't too hard to get through.

- Quentin Blake's illustrations are SO much fun! I love how much they add to the story. Roald Dahl's books wouldn't be the same without them. Blake's style matches Dahl's stories perfectly!

- I finally get the title of this book!! It is Tortoise backwards! HA!

- A very whimsical, clever, and fun book! I loved reading this to my daughter.

I love Roald Dahl's entertaining writing style and imagery. His stories are very whimsical, but I do see the flaws in this book. Mr. Hoppy lies to Mrs. Silver about her pet, marries her after lying to her, and gives the original tortiose away. I am not a huge fan of having lying a part of a children's book, but at least the tortiose is given to a good home.
In addition, there are other messages to the story: you should not sit and wait on the sidelines your whole life And that patience is key. Summary: this is not a perfect book, but if you are reading it to kids, maybe point out the flaws and teach them lessons from the book's flaws.

I'm not sure how to feel about this one. I suppose it's an interesting moral dilemma - if you lie and no direct harm comes from it (everyone is as happier or happier than they were before), can you justify the deception? Hmm.

literally these books r so short they used to feel so long to me

A silly little Dahl story. Goofy love story, with tortoises.
