As Pet would say, "Oi!" This was a really good episode from this series. So much more is revealed. So many feelings. First, a couple things that struck me along the way:

At 21%, Pet references the USBs in her room, in the marble bowl and chest of drawers. But didn’t she give them to the green man!? What are they doing back in her room? They are part of the leverage for her side of the new contract with Zero (which she doesn't sign yet in the entire book).

At 45% “I didn’t particularly want to be murdered today. I was wearing my good jeans.”

I binged this series, one book after another; without a breath between. Which means I didn’t pause to review each one individually. So, this review will be for all 10 books collectively.

I quite enjoyed this. I’ve not come across a lot of urban fantasy set in Tasmania and I really appreciated the little splashes of normal culture that are only notable because I’m listening to it as an outsider—like referring to someone looking like they come from the mainland or going to Woolies for groceries, or the regional slang (“You’ve got kangaroos in the top paddock” was a notable favorite). I loved it and the narrator—Zehra Jane Naqvi— did an amazing job bringing this to life (especially when you factor a Korean-speaking character in too).

Pet has such an endearing personality and voice and her three psychos kept me interested. I love the found family aspect of the series. Pet found herself a whole new family…or created it rather. She’s the glue that holds them together.

I will admit that quite a lot is left unexplained in the world in the beginning. So, I just had to force myself to be comfortable with a certain amount of not knowing that I’d have preferred not to. But it was still a lot of fun, with a slow-building reveal over 10 books. (And I felt a lot firmer in my understandings by the end.)

The characters remained consistent throughout, the over-arching plot ties nicely together, and the whole thing ends well. I did regret that some of the bigger characters seemed to have a lot less time on page, even if their importance wasn’t diminished, as the series progressed. (I missed them and the group’s banter.) And while certain aspects of the ending were sad, there was a wonderful sense of forgiveness and acceptance of human foibles.

All in all, for a bit of absurdist, urban fantasy fun, this worked a treat and I’ll be looking for more from this author.

I loved all the previous books, but I love the mysteries being unveiled even more! I can't wait to know what the Pet is! I can't wait for the next book! This series is perfect!

If I could shut up in horrible circumstances, I'd do it a lot more often, I can tell you. Life'd be a heck of a lot more comfortable.

my Thoughts:
• this was probably my second favorite of the series so far! I wasn't super sold in the first half but the second half got me, man
• the found family vibes are so strong in this one and they make me so soft
• like Pet holding Athelas' hand because "sometimes even psychos need their hands held" PLS I'm so soft
• the tie frog is iconic
• Pet: "he's my boyfriend." JinYeong: *instant internal panic*
• there wasn't as much development of the big overarching plot in this one (like, there's some, but not as much as previous books), but the character development here was great
• "don't you threaten me with the consequences of my actions!" made me laugh out loud
• all the stuff at Morgana's house left me with my mouth open because WOW is that a cool twist

4.5 stars from me, I am loving this series so much and I'm already not ready for it to end
((content warning for gruesome murder scenes, violence, and a conversation about suicidal thoughts))

This one was slower with a little less action than the others. Also I was a little bit confused because there were a ton of references to events that I hadn't seen in the previous books. After reading a couple of other reviews it sounds like there was a short story in which those events occurred, but I didn't see it listed with the other books in the series so I have no idea.

I have no issues with short stories, my complaint about it has more to do with how often it is referenced in the main series. I feel that short stories that an author writes that are not part of the official reading order should not take away from the experience and confuse readers, only add to your reading experience.

That said I am eager to go on to the next book.

UGH. Do not like what is seeming to be a setup for a Pet/Zero romance.

"...Didn’t particularly want to be murdered today. I was wearing my good jeans."

Been waiting for this one to come out, and man I missed reading about this world and characters!

description

Also-I just want to say that I still love Pet's humor- and I'm glad that some of the side characters are getting some more background.

So, there was a lot going on in this one- we have Pet back at home with the Psychos- and its nice to see the balance is a little bit more....balanced in their relationships. Pet has more of a voice in the group and input into their cases- which is where this book starts off.

After trying to keep her distance to protect her friend Morgana. Pet is pulled back into her life after being asked to help track down her missing internet friend. They met through a mysterious game called City Fae that is a little to familiar for comfort- and has too much info to be just a regular video game.

description

Armed with this knowledge Team Psycho is pulled in a lot of different directions- from the Golden Fae, to possible Family Ties, and other outside groups all having an angle in this mystery.

However, we still have familiar and frustrating mysteries to question- such as what happened to Pet's parents, whats going on with her house, whats the mad ole bloke up to, and what is the killer from book one up to (STILL!) Yeah so a lot going on
SpoilerNot to mention whats going on with Morgana and her house- but at least we got that mystery solved in this one- even if was a bit painful for Pet in the end

But also still love me some sassy Pet.

“But after all, I shouldn’t wish to interfere with that charming insouciance of yours, so consider yourself free to ignore my advice.” I gazed at him for a few moments, then said, “Don’t you threaten me with the consequences of my actions.”
